These chemicals will cause protein loss, which may make hair weaker and appear thinner. In most cases, these harsh chemicals should not cause permanent hair loss falling from the scalp, yet they will damage hair and scalp and leave it dry. If these chemicals are misused, they will cause severe damage, and hair will break and will experience hair fall.
Using a hair lightener or bleach is the most damaging chemical for the hair and scalp. Most hair bleach is a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. When applied to the hair, these chemicals raise the hair’s outer cuticle to reach the cortex, the inner core, where the underlining pigment resides. So. when the hair gets washed, it leaves the hair lighter. In this video, I explain what you need to know about bleach and color and the likely causes of hair loss.
People that use hair bleach will experience their hair appearing thinner after the treatment. This reaction happens because bleached hair generally feels thinner. After all, it has lost its lipids, fatty acids, and keratin protein, giving it structure, strength, and elasticity. Many people may experience temporary hair loss after bleaching.
When people bleach their hair, there is the time it goes on the scalp and penetrates underneath into the hair follicles, which will harm the skin barrier (acid mantle) and the microbiome and cause irritation and inflammation. This temporary type of hair loss is called telogen effluvium.
The scalp’s hair cycle begins to shed due to the chemical stressor and dramatic change to the scalp. Most people find that once they stop using bleach on the scalp, their natural hair grows back like before bleaching.
If you experience hair loss after bleaching, stop and let your scalp recover. If hair loss is temporary, you will know it is bleach or hair color. If the hair loss continues, it could be androgenic alopecia; in this case, you must find the root cause. A blood test can be the first step to finding the root cause. By healing the root cause, hair will begin to regrow.
If you are experiencing hair loss and recently had your hair colored or bleached, we recommend stopping and beginning using a hair and scalp treatment to repair damaged hair and replenish moisture. Use a hair and scalp treatment that restores the skin barrier (acid mantle) and the proper pH (4.5-5.5) and promotes hair growth. We recommend COLURE’s hair and scalp treatment. Use it every time you wash your hair and scalp for at least the first 4-6 times. After that, you can use COLURE’s hair and scalp treatment once a week for maintenance.
